The Hidden Costs of Moving Home and How To Avoid Them
May 11, 2022

Moving home can be an expensive time – this has always been true. However, in recent years bills and house prices have risen to an all-time high, and there are many hidden costs you may encounter. If you are looking for a way to avoid unexpected costs, then read on. We have collected a list of ways that you can keep those expenses under control so moving house feels like less of a stretch.

Meter Readings

If you are moving out of a property, make sure you take final meter readings for your gas, water and electricity. You will need to submit the final readings to your suppliers to avoid paying towards the next occupiers bills.

Removal Companies

If you are going to use a removal company, get quotes from at least three different companies. Make the removal company aware of everything you need their help with, including items from the garden. Agree on a fixed-fee and make sure all parties are clear on what the price does and doesn’t include. Neither you nor the removal company want any last-minute surprises on moving day.

Referral Fees

It is quite common for Conveyancing firms to pay referral fees to estate agents in return for new Conveyancing instructions. Some firms absorb the referral fee as part of their expenses, but other firms may pass the fee onto you. Double-check your estimate to see if you are being charged a referral fee on top of your legal fees.

Legal Fees

Solicitors must be transparent with their pricing from the outset; this is a requirement from the Solicitors Regulation Authority. When you are comparing estimates make sure you know exactly what work is included and whether or not the firm will add any additional costs or has shown additional costs on a separate line for items such as SDLT returns or dealing with a mortgage.

If you are moving home get in touch with Bowsers Solicitors and a member of the Conveyancing team will be more than happy to help.
